Privés de la commande des meubles de luxe (monopole de la France) et de la grande série (fief de l'Allemagne et de l'Autriche), les architectes décorateurs belges modernistes de l'entre-deux-guerres se sont frayé une voie originale et expérimentale.
Le livre évoque leur histoire au cœur d'une période d'intenses changements, marquée par la naissance des contreplaqués qui remédient aux effets dévastateurs du chauffage central sur le mobilier, l'engouement pour le bois malléable, l'apparition des meubles en tubes chromés, du mobilier à combinaisons, de l'éclairage indirect, le renouveau du tissage, du papier peint, des bibelots…

With 576 pages, this hardcover book retraces the work of architecs decorateurs from Belgium in the 1920' and 1930'.
Deprived of the order of luxury furniture (monopoly of France) and large series (stronghold of Germany and Austria), the modernist Belgian architects and decorators of the interwar period forged an original and experimental path.
The book evokes their story at the heart of a period of intense change, marked by the birth of plywood which remedies the devastating effects of central heating on furniture, the craze for malleable wood, the appearance of chrome tube furniture, combination furniture, indirect lighting, the revival of weaving, wallpaper, trinkets…
It is a true artistic adventure which is revealed during these abundantly illustrated pages, and written by a team of specialists, based on the exceptional collections of the International Center for the City, architecture and landscape, soon to be housed by a new museum in Brussels: the Kanal-Centre Pompidou.
