Description

Editorial Reviews

Fan, materials of excellence, by S. Le Guen and G. Letourmy-Bordier, Ed. Communauté de Communes des Sablons, 12 inches x 8 inches ( 30 cm x 21 cm ), hardcover book with 180 full color pages

This hardcover book with 180 full color pages and great illustrations, devoted to fans, was printed for the exhibition at the French Museum of "Nacre et Tabletterie" in Meru.
At once familiar and unknown, the fan combines know-how and artistic creation.
This book examines the work of artisans of the region from its origins to the present day from a historical and technical perspective.
The photographs are elegant as fans, of which we appreciate the delicacy with many details.
Several plates show further different phases of manufacture, from the raw material to the final piece, each one illustrating the work of a raw material.
Bone, horn, wood, but also tortoiseshell, mother of pearl and ivoire transiting from the French port of Dieppe to the French capital, all were shaped in the villages of the Oise region. Fan making is mentioned since the second half of the 17th century, in correlation Parisian artists.
If history has rarely withheld the name of fan makers' lines, as is the case for the Hoguet family, some artists have moved to the pantheon of fans. The life of seven of them is retraced here with a special mention for Georges Bastard qualified as "reviver of the fan" in the early 20th century.
